WoW has vertical progression, as in your character increases in level and everything you do is about getting stronger gear and higher level. Then a new patch drops and everything you did becomes obsolete. In GW2 the strongest gear is ascended, and that’s been the case for almost the entire lifespan of the game.

After you purchase gems etc for the first time they validate your account to make sure it's legit. Only have to go through it once and may take a bit, but its worth keeping the nasties out of the game's economy.
